Minutes of Meeting for May 17, 2018

Minutes of Meeting for May 17, 2018

  1. Call to Order:   Bill E.  led us in the Pledge and then we sang God Bless America.  Bill then turned it over to Barb and Susan.
  2. Hostesses:  Barb L. and Susan D.  Barbara and Susan report 50 folks today and it was so good to see Ed and Elaine back again as well as many others.
  3. Vice President:   No Debbi but Bill reported still 113 members.
  4. Secretary:   Kristi G.:   No corrections to the minutes and they were accepted
  5. Treasurer:  Walt R.:   Walt reports $2,282.77 in the coffers.  WE WERE SHORT AGAIN $16.00 THIS WEEK in coffee money!  Please people, remember to put your money in the pot for coffee “and”.  It’s $2.00 for a cup of coffee which includes all refills; $1.00 for sweets. Thanks much.
  6. Coordinators’ Reports:
Sunshine Mary M.:  Mary took her first turn at Sunshine lady and ask that we help her in that if we hear of anyone who is ailing, to please let her know as this is all new to her and we assured her we would do that.  This also seems like an appropriate place to let all he new folks know that if you are in need of a wheelchair, a walker, some type of medical assist hardware, Sandy and Tony Padilla have a lot of these kinds of items in their garage for use by our members only.  Further in these minutes, I’m going to also remind everyone of all the other kinds of things that our people “collect” to help others.
·         Historian:  Magda Q.:   Magda thanked everyone for the tabs.  Magda collects the pull tabs from cans for the Ronald McDonald house.  We’ve collected over 30 pounds of tabs for Magda and Ronald McDonald House.  Just one more thing we do to help others.
·         Philanthropy:  John Z.:    John told us that Sandy and Tony volunteered to collect the money for the foodbank in his absence but please don’t bring any food in until John comes back as there will be no one to take it to the food bank until then.
·         Activities:  Linda A:   See activities listed below.  Note:  When you sign up for an activity, please let whoever oversees that activity know whether or not you’ll make it.  It’s embarrassing if you tell a place that 30 or 40 folks are coming to a function, so they set up for that, get extra help for that and then only 20 or so show up.    Please remember to RSVP if you are going to attend something and to let the person in charge know if you can’t make it.  Thanks.

  1. Group Concerns/Good of the Group
  • Kristi had a request from Val and Rich that we include Sandy’s Thought for the Day and her ending joke in the minutes and we are going to do this going forward.

  • Jim Alam was given a pamphlet about Identify Theft and some things to look for.  You can go to the website which is www.trueidentity.com/identify-theft-resource/warning-signs-identity-theft?  Jim also has some copies if you need one.
  • Please start thinking about our June food drive for the Marana Police Department.  We’ll be collecting all the foodstuffs on Thursday, June 14th to be taken right over to the police department after the meeting.  All food donations are most heartily accepted, and they really appreciate things like power bars and all that healthy kind of “stuff” along with the usual cookies, etc.   They always, always just think it’s the best thing ever when we bring everything in for them.  They truly are thankful for our donations.
  • OK, here are some more things that some of the group “collect”.  Sandy Padilla saves the little squares on the sides of boxes and/or labels on cans that are for Labels for Education/Box tops for Education.  Bitsy collects the plastic garbage bags for various entities and she collects aluminum cans for a local cat shelter.  I have been collecting household items such as empty paper towel rolls, empty toilet paper rolls, empty egg cartons, bottle caps, etc., for Treasures for Teachers.  I do have a listing for them if anyone wants to know what all they collect and it’s a lot of different things that we just usually just throw away and that the teachers all work their “teacher magic” and have the children make things out of it.
I think I covered all that, but if I forgot something, please let me know and I’ll put it in next week’s minutes.  Oh, one more thing, everyone brings books/magazines to share.

  1. Thought for the Day:  Sandy P.  Sandy’s thought for today was “Be careful who you vent to, a listening ear can also be a running mouth”.  Her ending joke was “I dislike when people accuse me of lollygagging when I am quite clearly dillydallying!”
  2. Adjournment:  Bill E.: Bill adjourned the meeting at 9:57 AM
