IMPORTANT NOTICE

IMPORTANT NOTICE
PLEASE NOTE We are an active group of congenial senior citizens and retirees who meet at 9:00 AM on most Thursdays at The Station Pub and Grill at Wade and Silverbell in Marana, Arizona. The group has been in continuous existence since 1994. Prior to January 2013 we met at the Continental Ranch Community Center. The Association Board of Directors changed the use policy of the community center to include a $40.00 fee for each weekly meeting. With our small operating budget we were unable to continue meeting there. Rock N Java hosted our meetings until their business closed.   Now our home is The Station.

Minutes of Meeting for April 12, 2018

Minutes of Meeting for April 12, 2018
  1. Call to Order:   Bill led the group in the Pledge and singing God Bless America.  We had a guest speaker, Diane Gleason who was experiencing “technical difficulties” so we went on with the meeting and her presentation will be reported on later in these minutes.  Bill then turned the meeting over to Barbara and Susan.
  2. Hostesses Barb L.  and Susan D.  Barb counted 53 in attendance today.  Barb and Susan welcomed Lois, a guest visiting from Kansas and Carol Altman’s niece Gayle was with us for the meeting and Barb gave her our condolences.
  3. Vice President:  Debbi S.  Debbi and Walt have reconciled the “books” after all dues have been paid and we have 113 members.
  4. Secretary:   Kristi G.:   A motion was made to approve the minutes for the April 5th meeting and the motion was seconded and carried.
  5. Treasurer:  Walt R.:  Walt reported we have $2,400.19 in the bank.    Walt also has paid the $19.00 fee for the group to have their IRS Form 501-7 registered for another year.  Walt also sent the condolence letters out with the money we collected split evenly between both Carol and Joyce’s families.    Walt also will have the new plaques with the 3 new names soon.  He also received a letter from Gospel Rescue Mission and they are opening a new men’s shelter on May 12th from 11:00 AM until 2:00 PM.  This shelter is located on Palo Verde Blvd. just north of Irvington and was last operated as a Radisson Hotel.  He thought maybe some might have in interest in seeing how the Mission works with folks in helping them get back on their feet.
Please remember to put your money in the pot for coffee “and”.  It’s $2.00 for a cup of coffee which includes all refills; $1.00 for sweets. Thanks much.

OK, our guest speaker Diane could not get the Power Point presentation to work, and she really didn’t need it.  Her enthusiasm took care of that for her.  Diane is working with a group called System Coalition that works with children of all ages for STEM camps.  STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.  They need volunteer teachers for 4 weeks from 8 AM until Noon to help with the kids.  The curriculum is all done, you just follow along.  Diane made it sound so interesting and fun, I wish I could go to the camp!  Just a few of the things the kids learn is how to build a robot, teaching aeronautics so they can go on to Right Flight camp, and building a UFO craft, and Junior Shark Tank!  For more information, please call Diane at 724.561.3718.  She is also going to get some flyers printed to pass around and will get some to us.

  1. Coordinators’ Reports:
Sunshine Dorie Z.:  Dorie reports we are going on week 2 with no reports of anyone being ill!  She is still looking for someone to take over the Sunshine position as she and John will be going to the mountains for a few months over the summer.
·         Historian:  Magda Q.:  Magda was excited to tell us that Englebert Humperdink (her all-time fave) will be coming to Casino Del Sol on May 6th, just in time for her May 3rd birthday.  So, anyone interested in seeing Englebert, please contact Magda for more info.  (Folks, I suggest one of us go with, so we can keep her off the stage ðŸ˜Š – I told you it was her all-time favorite)
·         Philanthropy:  John Z.:  No report.
·         Activities:  Linda A:   See activities listed below.  NOTE:  When you sign up for a luncheon or dinner, please let the people who are in charge of it know whether or not you can make the function.  It gets embarrassing when you say 40 people are going to show up and the place sets up for that and gets extra help for that and then only 25 or 30 show up.  Please remember to RSVP if you are going to something and to let someone know if you can’t make it.
  1. Group Concerns/Good of the Group
  • Jim said that 13 showed up for the Romeo’s breakfast and they always have a great time and Dorie reported there were 9 folks who showed up for the IHOP breakfast and they also had a real good time.
  • Bitsy is still collecting aluminum cans and grocery bags for various charities.  Thanks for the good works B
  1. Thought for the Day:  Sandy P.  Always a great thought to end the meeting with and always a great joke to leave us all smiling!  Thanks Sandy 😊
  2. Adjournment:  Bill E.:  The meeting ended at 10:15 AM.

  1. Call to Order:   Bill led the group in the Pledge and singing God Bless America and then turned the meeting over to Barbara and Susan.
  2. Hostesses Barb L.  and Susan D.  Barb counted 48 in attendance today.  Barb and Susan welcomed our two newest members Bill and Lori – WELCOME!!  They also welcomed back Maria and Pedro and thankfully, Maria is doing much better!
Susan apologized for being late and told us an “old friend” (her Maid-of-Honor 49 years ago!) that she hadn’t spoken to in 25 years telephoned just when she was getting ready to leave so of course she wanted to talk to her.  This led to Susan telling us of her and Gene’s purchase of an RV and of the adventures they are going to embark on this summer, going to Denver first to meet up with this good friend and then off to Michigan and all parts in between.  Happy Trails you guys and be sure to keep a log to fill us all in when you get back from your adventures!
  1. Vice President:  Debbi S.  Debbi reports 120 members.
  2. Secretary:   Kristi G.:  The minutes for March 29th were approved with one correction that being 120 members, not 10.  (Sorry about that)
  3. Treasurer:  Walt R.:  Walt reported we have $2,128.07 in the bank.  Please remember to put your money in the pot for coffee “and”.  It’s $2.00 for a cup of coffee which includes all refills; $1.00 for sweets. Thanks much.
  4. Coordinators’ Reports:
  5. Sunshine Dorie Z.:  Dorie is still looking for someone to take over the Sunshine position as she and John will be going to the mountains for a few months over the summer.  Dorie also happily announced that as far as she knows, no one was sick last week -  yippee!!!
·         Historian:  Magda Q.:  Magda took the tabs to Ronald McDonald House and they weighed in at 27.8 pounds.  Good work folks BUT Magda asked that I look up last years tally and it was 29 pounds!!  We need to drink more in 2018 people ðŸ˜Š
·         Philanthropy:  John Z.:  No John, so no report.

  • We again took up a collection like we always do, for Carol and Joyce and the final tally is $436.00!  This will be split equally between the two families.  Thank you all for your generosity!
  • Pam personally wanted to thank Jim Alam for arranging the visit to the Dwarf Car Museum.  From the comments heard around the room, this was a rip-roaring success.  Pam said it was so very interesting and that the gentleman who does this, Ernie, was a really swell guy.  It was a great trip and they were so happy that she and Dan went.  Maybe Jim can arrange another trip in the fall for those of us who couldn’t make it this time.  I know I for one would love to go.  I saw some pictures Jim took and this Ernie guy is amazing.  I think I heard Jim say he also made his own tools.  Very interesting.
  • Bitsy was reading the latest Costco magazine and came across an article about a company that makes orthotics for your shoes with a 3D printer for only $139.00!  That is an awesome price as she said she has paid as much as $450.00 for them and they still weren’t right, and I know that the “Good Feet” store is well over $300.00 to $400.00 or more for the same thing.  This company will be at the Costco at 1650 E. Tucson Marketplace April 13 through the 22nd.    So, if you are thinking about getting some orthotics, this would probably be a good event to attend.
  • Paul Bach was going through some of his dear wife Joan’s things, and found a beautifully colored afghan that she had started.  He has the beginnings of it along with the knitting needles and the yarn.  If anyone would like to finish this off, Paul says you are welcome to it and to keep the afghan upon completion.  Thank you, Paul!
  • Magda was going through the “Memory Books” from 1994 thru 2011 (photo albums we used to call them) and found someone in the group “way back when” made up a listing for all the members to fill in anonymously of where they were from, what their job was, were they in the military, what was their education, etc.  This was some history of folks in the group and we all decided we’d like to do it again.  I took the paperwork and will make up something that we can all fill in.  It’s very interesting to share this information and again, no names, it will be strictly anonymous.
  • Bitsy is still collecting aluminum cans and grocery bags for various charities.  Thanks for the good works Bitsy!

  1. Thought for the Day:  Sandy P.  Sandy read Carol’s favorite Irish Blessing….” May the road come up to greet you.”  I’m sure most of us know this prayer but if not, look it up, it’s beautiful.    She also shared one of Carol’s favorite jokes and one of Joyce’s favorites.  Great way to end the meeting.
  2. Adjournment:  Bill E.:  The meeting ended at 10:11 AM.

Minutes of Meeting for March 29, 2018

Minutes of Meeting for March 29, 2018

1.       Call to Order:   Bill led the group in the Pledge and singing God Bless America and then turned the meeting over to Magda who gave a short remembrance of our 3 ladies that we lost recently.  Carol and Gladys both were members for over 18 years.  Joyce about 12 to 14 years.  Gladys was our adventurous one even taking the mule ride down and back up into the Grand Canyon at the tender age of 80!  Gladys was the first to volunteer for whatever was needed.  Carol was a true Marine wife to her dear Eddie and reminded us that they weren’t soldiers but Servicemen to our Country!  Joyce was our activist who once started a petition against the Board who eventually kicked us out of the Community Center!  Bad for them, good for us!  Joyce was a great activities chair who knew how to delegate to have her committee help her with these tasks.
2.       Hostesses:  Barb L.  and Susan D.  Barb counted 56 folks again today.  Barb and Susan welcomed two new visitors who instantly because members Bill and Lori – WELCOME!!  They also welcomed back Kate and Don H., Elaine H. and Rose!  Susan also talked about how we all take care of one another in the wake of our recent losses.

6.      Coordinators’ Reports:
7.       Sunshine Dorie Z.:  Dorie lightened the mood by reporting that I was cited in the Marana News as getting an award from the Marana Police Department for helping to digitize their records which she found pretty amazing being as all the trouble I have with getting the minutes out to everyone ðŸ˜Š  George Rigney then asked where all the police records really are and I replied that they were probably up the cloud with all the minutes that didn’t make it through to everyone 😊  I can’t explain it people, it’s computers, what more can I say…..

  2. Sunshine Dorie Z.:  Dorie not here today but we got reports from members.  Craig called Marie and she is still doing chemotherapy.  Richard told us that Kate Horner had some eye surgery and will be back soon.  Jim said he stopped by John DiPalma’s and says that John is not feeling too well and that he thinks John would enjoy some company.  Debbi reported on Carol and she is getting weaker.  Short visits are welcome.  Barb Worsham reported that Rose is getting better.  New members Ray and Marce Oswald will be out for a little bit.  Ray e-mailed me and told me that Marce stepped on a dog bone and broke her foot badly, so they won’t be back until she’s doing better of course.  We need to keep them all in our prayers, and extra prayers actually.

  1. Group Concerns/Good of the Group

  • Richard took care of the “White Elephant” raffle and it was great!  We made $50.00 which was enough to pay for the coffee and today!  Good job everyone and can’t wait for the next one.  It’s a lot of fun!
  • Kristi knows of an organization called Treasures for Teachers.  They take all kinds of household/kid’s items, things you would normally just throw away, for example, bottle caps, the empty toilet paper roll or the empty paper towel roll.  The teachers then somehow work their magic with these items and help the children make things.  If you are interested see Kristi for a list.  Kristi also has forms for any Vets that may want to make the trip to Washington DC on the Veterans Honor Flight.

  1. Thought for the Day:  Sandy P.  No Sandy today but Debbi had a beautiful thought for the day and a cute joke.
  2. Adjournment:  Bill E.:  The meeting ended at 9:56 AM.
