Minutes of Meeting Held May 28, 2009

1. Call to Order: President Joan Travis-Triumph opened the meeting at 9:33 a.m. and led the pledge of allegiance. Forty-four people were present.

2. Host/Hostess: Ed & Collette: Several returning members were welcomed back.

3. Vice-President: Jim: Told a story about a donkey in a hole.

4. Secretary: Lew: Last week’s minutes were passed as amended --- §6.3 was 175, is 70; §8(g) was 6, is 2; §(g) was 75, is 61.

5. Treasurer: Walt: Financial status: Checking: $759, Cash: $22, Total: $781. (No extra-ordinary expenses were incurred.)

6. Coordinators Reports:

6.1 Refreshments: Jan & Linda A.: Today’s refreshments were by Vi & Don with Jan. (If unable to help as scheduled, please let Linda or Jan know by Tuesday, if possible.)

6.2 Sunshine: John & Linda D. (a) Carol reported that Elaine Schwartz had another trip to NMC. She was really sick but the problem source has not been determined. ….. (b) Joan T. reported that Don Brick was very ill after their cruise. He suffers from COPD (emphysema) so his immune system is low. Don’s doctor suspects that he might have Swine Flu; he has lost twenty pounds. Hilde has a cold. Some crew members were sick and one had attended their table. Please call if you hear of any health issues.

6.3 Philanthropy: Betty: 16 lbs of food were taken to the Food Bank. Betty said that hygienic products were also welcome. Sandy mentioned that her grand-nephew requested toilet paper and Betty suggested putting some TP into baggies for our packages to the military. They can then be put into their pockets.

6.4 Activities: Alice: See the attached agenda for events in the next few weeks.

7. Old and/or New Business: None.

8. Good of the Group: (a) Papa Murphy’s are providing free samples of their pizza today. ….. (b) Lew requested that he be informed of any errors or omissions by e-mail – that’s the main reason for sending out preliminary copies (in addition to advising non-attendees about what’s going on). ….. (c) Eighteen went to Miss Saigon and had excellent meals. ….. (d) Joan T. read a memo from Nicole Glasner which advised us of a protest meeting tonight regarding the proposed erection of a sixty-one foot imitation palm tree tower next to the children’s playground at the Windmill Pool. In it was a plea for us to call the Mayor and/or other city representatives to voice our protests. Both the Architectural Committee and the Homeowners Association are against it. The meeting is at 7:00 pm tonight at Twin Peaks and Coachline. Another meeting is to be held in Marana at 7:00 pm on 2-June. KVOA (Channel 4) will be recording events. Jorge volunteered to drive people to the Marana one. Alice B. pointed out that the tower was for AT & T only – other cell phones cannot use it, so other towers may be requested. …. (e) To clarify past statements, Alice B. reiterated that Gaslight is on 1-Dec and the Christmas party is on 9—Dec.

PS: Papa Murphy’s supplied pizza appetizers first, then came back later with samples of their take-and-bake pizza, along with drinks. All agreed that the pizzas were excellent. They left several coupons for members to take home. They are located beside Cold Stone in Fry’s plaza. They said that pizzas can be made up while you wait (about five minutes) or phone ahead; they also have great salads.

1. Call to Order: President Joan Travis-Triumph opened the meeting at 9:30 AM and led the pledge of allegiance. Thirty-five people were present.

2. Host/Hostess: Ed & Collette: New member Jeanne Lemieux was introduced. New to Tucson, she is a retired RN; her husband will be joining her in July.

3. Vice-President: Jim: In Jim’s absence, Walt told a story about drinking from a pond.

4. Secretary: Lew: Last week’s minutes were passed as printed.

5. Treasurer: Walt: Financial status: Checking: $759, Cash: $8, Total: $767. (No extra-ordinary expenses were incurred.)

6. Coordinators Reports:

6.1 Refreshments: Jan & Linda A.: Today’s refreshments were by Carol & Ed with Jorge. (If unable to help as scheduled, please let Linda or Jan know by Tuesday, if possible.)

6.2 Sunshine: John & Linda D. (a) Ernie has recovered to the point where Debbie went back to work. (b) Carol reported that Elaine Schwartz was back home after a trip to NMC for heart fibrillation. Chuck’s Alzheimer’s continues. Please call if you hear of any health issues.

6.3 Philanthropy: Betty: 175 lbs of food plus $10 check were taken to the Food Bank. Betty said that hygienic products were also welcome.

6.4 Activities: Alice: (in Denver). See the attached agenda for events in the next few weeks.

7. Old and/or New Business: None.

8. Good of the Group: (a) Papa Murphy’s are providing free samples of their pizza on the 28th of this month. The establishment is a “take and bake” facility but the samples will be pre-cooked for us. ….. (b) Only five members were going to the Train Museum. ….. (c) Instead of going to the (closed) Red Sky Restaurant for Father’s Day, Luna Bella has agreed to the same terms ($14.95) and a reservation was made in our name. ….. (d) Lew mentioned that El Charro at Oracle & Orange Grove had also closed, but they have opened a new branch in Oro Valley. ….. (e) Ed A. reminded us to fly our flags on 14-June. ….. (f) JoAnn said that Marana was still teaching Line Dancing at our local church and they were having Water Aerobics and Ballet at the Marana swimming pool. ….. (g) Barbara H. informed us of a meeting on 6-June at Marana Civic Center, regarding erection of a 75 ft cell phone tower. John urged people to show up in person instead of mailing the petition that was distributed. ….. (h) Ed D. suggested taking money from the treasury to get stuff for the Military parcels. Betty pointed out that we already take cash to pay for the boxes and mailing thereof. ….. (i) Joan M. told us that the Tower Theater was only $5 on Thursdays; Foothills ditto on Tuesdays.

1. Call to Order: President Joan Travis-Triumph. In Joan’s absence, Vice-president Jim Alam opened the meeting at 9:30 AM. Jorge led the pledge of allegiance. Thirty-six people were present.

2. Host/Hostess: Ed & Collette: Betty, a friend of Jim and Linda, was introduced.

3. Vice-President: Jim: No change in membership. Jim read a joke, followed by a poem.

4. Secretary: Lew: Last week’s minutes were passed as read.

5. Treasurer: Walt: Financial status: Checking: $718, Cash: $8, Total: $726. (No extra-ordinary expenses were incurred.)

6. Coordinators Reports:

6.1 Refreshments: Jan & Linda A.: Today’s refreshments were by Jim & Linda with Barbara H. (If unable to help as scheduled, please let Linda or Jan know by Tuesday, if possible.)

6.2 Sunshine: John & Linda D. (a) Ernie was recovering OK and was now eating soft food. .….. (b) Nothing else to report. Please call if you hear of any health issues.

6.3 Philanthropy: Betty: Nothing new to report.

8. Good of the Group: (a) JoAnn told us about Mothers Day; seven attended. It was 96º to 98º in the shade and 104º in the open, so anyone who got soaked dried quickly. …. (b) Lew had contacted Papa Murphy’s manager (beside Fry’s) who had expressed an interest in providing free samples of their pizza at one of our meetings. Jim asked Jan to follow up on it and try to have it on the 28th of this month. The establishment is a “take and bake” facility but the samples will be pre-cooked for us. ….. (c) For the first time ever, none of the SCRCR birthday celebrants was present, so Jim had us all sing Happy Birthday anyway.

1. Call to Order: President Joan Travis-Triumph. In Joan’s absence, Vice-president Jim Alam opened the meeting at 9:30 AM and led the pledge of allegiance. Thirty-three people were present.

2. Host/Hostess: Ed & Collette: In their absence, Alice and Magda were welcomed back.

3. Vice-President: Jim: No change in membership. Jim read a few ethnic jokes.

4. Secretary: Lew: Last week’s minutes were passed as read.

5. Treasurer: Walt: Financial status: Checking: $765, Cash: $8, Total: $773. (No change.)

6. Coordinators Reports:

6.1 Refreshments: Jan & Linda A.: Today’s refreshments were by Suzette and Mary T. (If unable to help as scheduled, please let Linda or Jan know by Tuesday, if possible.)

6.2 Sunshine: John & Linda D. (a) Linda D. was present, with John. ….. (b) Betty was present and ready to resume her SCRCR duties.. ….. (c) Linda reported that, in addition to his RTV accident, Ernie had passed out, fallen, and broken his jaw; it was subsequently wired. He was moved from Phoenix to NMC in Tucson, but due to lack of specialists there, he ended up in TMC (where his wife Debbie works). P.S. After the meeting, Linda called to let us know that Ernie was back at home and was able to talk. .….. Please call if you hear of any health issues.

6.3 Philanthropy: Betty: Nothing to report. Betty thanked those who had taken her place, also those who had sent cards, fruit, and other expressions of good will.

6.4 Activities: Alice: After twelve had signed up, only six went to the dinner at Coco’s. See the attached agenda for events in the next few weeks.

7. Old and/or New Business: None.

8. Good of the Group: (a) Jim said that HOA had sent out for bids on the proposed ramp improvements. He had also overheard some discussion about a gas station going in at the wash and Twin Peaks Road. It was mentioned that petitions against this move had already been presented. ….. (b) Another previously-discussed subject, that of the proposed 75 ft cell transmission tower, was briefly mentioned. ….. (c) Vi told us about a TOPS member who had successfully shed several pounds during a drive for Lent. ….. (d) Suzette pointed out an article in the paper about the new Sun Shuttle; it was suggested that we should take a drive in it. ….. (e) Magda had a great birthday: Playing the slots with gift money, she won $4,000 at two different machines, taking home $2,800 (after taxes) from each winning. Not satisfied with that, she hit another machine for $1,500! ….. (f) Carol thanked Barbara H. for arranging a great day at Old Tucson Studios. ….. (g) Alice B. announced that she had reserved the Elks Lodge for December-1 for our Christmas party. ….. (h) Ed A. reminded us that Armed Forces Day is coming up, on 16-May.
