Meeting Minutes of January 28, 2010

1. Call to Order: President Jim Alam called the meeting to order at 9:32 AM, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Jim then shared anecdotes from “The Geezer Forum”.
2. Host/Hostess: Bonnie and Bob Vantrepotte were absent . Ed and Colette Dubsky filled in. They started by welcoming back all of our winter members. Beverly and her mother May were introduced as guests.
3. Vice-President: Frank entertained us with another of his stories. He reported that we now have 76 members, 62 of whom are paid up with their dues. He also thanked Vi for making thank-you notes for businesses that contributed door prizes for our Christmas party.
4. Secretary: Jeanne: Last meeting’s minutes were accepted and approved.
5. Treasurer: Walt: Total in our bank account at present is $1,032.18 and we have $22.03 in petty cash.
6. Coordinators’ Reports:
6.1 Refreshments: Jorge and Linda A.: Refreshments this week were provided by Bo and Betty Bolin and Elaine Benn. Next week, Ed and Colette and Rosemarie Feraco will provide refreshments.
6.2 Sunshine: Linda and John were absent. Joann Ross reported that John DiPalma had outpatient surgery today for a torn rotator cuff. Don Ostberg will have a longer hospital stay due to more extensive surgery. He is in room 204 at Northwest Hospital (phone: 828-2204). Kay Peptis fell and suffered a broken hip. She will be at Life Care Center for therapy in room 2128. Donna St. John is having foot surgery on Feb. 10th.
6.3 Historian: Magda : Photos are needed from the time of our first meeting with the new board.
6.4 Philanthropy: Betty: 14# of food went to the Marana Food Bank this past week and coupons were mailed out. She reminded members not to forget the other charities.
6.5 Activities: Alice Behnke: See the attached agenda for events. Alice reminded us of the up-coming activities and reported that tickets are still available for the AZ Opry. Carol Altmann reminded us that the deadline for tickets for the football pool is next week’s meeting.
7. Group Concerns: a.) Jorge reported that Wednesday’s hike went well.
b.)Joann said that there would be a short meeting today to decide next week’s hike.
c.) John Lambert reported that all is well with the HOA.
d.) Edna suggested some changes to by-laws for us to consider: a central contact for single or ill residents needing assistance; honorary membership to those who enter assisted living so as not to affect our membership percentages. e.)John Lambert notified us that the HOA has officially sanctioned our group.
f.) Magda encouraged us all to remember the concerts offered at the U of A.
g.)Mike Rebro asked that e-mails or handwritten messages be given to him re upcoming events and functions for the BLOG. h.)Betty reminded us that money is due for the Cubs tickets and that the Cubs will be staying in Tucson.

Minutes of Meeting Held Jan. 21, 2010

1. Call to Order: President Jim Alam called the meeting to order at 9:30 AM. followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Jim then entertained us with”The Older Crowd” stories which most of us could relate to.
2. Host/Hostess: Bonnie and Bob Vantrepotte introduced Bill Heady from the HOA management company (covenants). He wanted to thank the SCRCR for all of the invaluable help volunteered by this group. Ruth Callahan was introduced as a guest and a potential new member. She is originally from Massachusetts; attended Boston College; taught the developmentally disabled. She is married, has 4 children, 9 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Mike Rebro was welcomed back.
3. Vice-President: Frank told us that there are currently 73 members. Correction to last week’s report: 53 members are current with their dues. He then shared with us a joke about 2 elderly men searching for their wives while shopping. It received a great response!
4. Secretary: Jeanne: Last meeting’s minutes were accepted and approved.
5. Treasurer: Walt: Last week Walt collected $72.00 in dues and paid $30.00 for baskets. $22.03 is in petty cash. Total is now standing at $940.21. Included in our current total is the $55.00 worth of donations to Papa Murphy’s for the school landscaping. Walt would like to pay this out.
6. Coordinators’ Reports:
6.1 Refreshments: Jorge Anda and Linda A.: Refreshments this week were provided by John and Linda and Alice B. Next week’s refreshments will be provided by Bo and Betty and Elaine Benn.
6.2 Sunshine: Linda DiPalma: Don Osberg will be having surgery next week at N.W. Ruth Lombardo will have an esophageal procedure today to enable her to eat better.
6.3 Historian: Magda Quiros was absent.
6.4 Philanthropy: Betty Bolin: Betty went to the Marana Food Bank this past week with 64# of food and a check for $231.67.
6.5 Activities: Alice Behnke: Alice still needs more bodies for the AZ Opry on 2/27. The deadline for sign up to the Opry is Feb. 4th and the money is due no later than that date ($26.00/ person). Payment for the Gaslight Theater ($14.50/person) is also due. Please make separate checks out to Alice for each of these activities. Don’t forget the super bowl function on Feb. 7th. See the attached agenda for events.
7. Group Concerns:
a.) Carol Altmann is in charge of the pool for super bowl and she will start selling tickets next week @ $1.00 per square. Initially tickets will be limited to 1 or 2 per person. Attendance is not required to win.
b.) Joann reported that the hike yesterday was canceled. Brown Mtn. will be the destination for next week.
c.) Jim received a call from the Lion’s Club and reported to them that as of yet, there is no significant interest.
d.) Betty reported that tickets for the ball game on Mar. 25th are ordered. Seating will be in section 109. Please submit your payments to her.
e.) Gladys wanted to thank everyone for their concern re her hospitalization last week.
f.) Nancy informed the group that the HOA board is discussing bids on landscaping for the common areas. On Saturday, Feb 6th @10 am, there will be a tour to check out the workmanship of the landscape contractors. This tour is open to all.
g.) Joann reported that the Mayor will attend the next study session of the board re concerns of the town of Marana. Check the Windmill for details.
h.) Jim announced that he is open to any ideas of SCRCR members re goals, volunteering, etc.
i.) Dick shared that the name of the new Marana Park is officially “The Town of Marana Crossroads at Silverbell Park”. He also notified the group of the passing last week of Wheeler Taft Abbett Sr. and that a memorial service will be held at the library – representation from SCRCR would be a good idea.
j.) Joan suggested social activities for the men of SCRCR and perhaps scheduling a regular luncheon would be something of interest. Agnes suggested a poker night. Jim appointed Frank and Jorge to explore this option. Jim also shared that a group of men have been socializing at 6AM at the Rock N Java coffee shop on Twin Peaks.

Minutes of Meeting January 14 2010

Call to Order: Today’s meeting was called to order at 9:30 AM by President Jim Alam, who started it with the Pledge of Allegiance. He read us a poem and then told a story for our entertainment!
2. Host/Hostess: Bonnie and Bob Vantrepotte had no new members to introduce, but welcomed back Elaine. Alice King and Dennis Foster were also welcomed back after their 10 day trip to China.
3. Vice-President: Frank Triumph reported membership this week as 73 ---- 55 of whom have paid their dues. He also reminded those who have not paid to do so ASAP.
4. Secretary: Jeanne Lemieux: Last meeting’s minutes were approved, seconded and accepted by the group. Approximately 42 members were in attendance today.
5. Treasurer: Walt Ross: Gave the group a breakdown of last year’s expenses. Our current bank account holds $918.18; $22.03 in petty cash; total of $940.21
6. Coordinators’ Reports:
6.1 Refreshments: Jorge and Linda A.: Jorge was absent today and Linda reported that refreshments for today were provided by Edna as well as Jim and Linda. Next week, refreshments will be provided by Alice Behnke and Linda DiPalma.
6.2 Sunshine: Linda DiPalma was absent. Jim reported on the fact that Mary Jensen was hospitalized for a couple of days. She is doing much better and should be home today or tomorrow. Don Ostberg has been undergoing a barrage of tests and may be hospitalized at a later date. He thanked the group for the lovely basket and all their best wishes.
6.3 Historian: Magda was absent.
6.4 Philanthropy: Betty: Nothing to the food bank this past week but she will be making a trip out there today. She reminded members not to forget the other charities.
6.5 Activities: Alice Behnke: Reported on the great time had by all who went on the trip to Laughlin. 24 members are signed up for dinner at El Corral tomorrow at 5:30 PM. The luncheon on Thursday, Jan. 28th is at the New Town Buffet, not the New Asian Buffet, at 12:30 PM. Money for The Gaslight Theater performance on Feb 23rd is due no later than Feb. 4th ($14.50 per person). We need 4 more people in order to get the discount for the AZ Opry on Feb. 27th ($26.oo per person). For the potluck on Thurs. Feb.11th, bring a dish but no desserts – that will be provided by Edna. See the attached agenda for events.
7. Group Concerns:
a.) Jim pointed out that there is a question re using the Community Center rooms for the Lion’s Club meetings (if and when that starts) and whether there would be a charge for that. This issue needs to be investigated further.
b.) Dennis gave us all an excellent description of the trip to China which he and Alice took as part of the Southern Arizona Symphony which was very informative. At the time of their trip, China was experiencing their worst winter in 60 years!
c.) Joann reported that 5 people did yesterday’s hike at Catalina State Park. Next week the hikers will be at Tucson Mtn. State Park hiking Brown Mtn. which will be a 4.8 mile trek.
d.) Gladys reported that the new city park at Cortaro and Silverbell will be named The Crossroads at Marana.

Meeting of minutes Jan 7 2010

1. Call to Order: Outgoing president Joan Travis-Triumph called the meeting to order at 9:30 am. And led the Pledge of Allegiance. Approximately 50 people were in attendance. Shortly after Joan gave a talk about the pros and cons of growing older. This was followed by the installation of new officers.
2. Host/Hostess: Bonnie and Bob Vantrepotte introduced a new member, Adria Lowery as well as guests attending. Linda Payette is a new resident to CR from New Mexico, as of just before Christmas. Bill and Betty Brooks were guests of Jim and Linda Alam. Charles Iverson is back with us for a couple of months. We also welcomed the return of Donna St. John.
3. Vice-President: Frank Triumph commented on the possibility of having several new members and reported that the current membership numbers 75.
4. Secretary: Minutes of the last meeting were accepted by Betty Bolin and seconded by the group. Last meeting’s minutes were taken by outgoing secretary Lew MacDonald and this meeting’s minutes were taken by new secretary, Jeanne Lemieux
5. Treasurer: Walt: The financial report will be held off until next week’s meeting. At present the status is $402.18 plus $22.03 in cash, giving SCRCR a total of $424.21. 6. Coordinators’ Reports:
6.1 Refreshments: Jorge and Linda A.: Today’s refreshments were provided by Carol Altman and Jorge Anda. Next week’s refreshments will be provided by Jim and Linda Alam and Edna Coburn. It was pointed out that in addition to writing articles for the Windmill re SCRCR, Edna also provides us with the monthly birthday cakes for our members.
6.2 Sunshine: Linda had no new reports for the Sunshine committee; however, her husband John is still recuperating. 6.3 Historian: Magda was absent but the SCRCR albums were again on display at the center. 6.4 Philanthropy: Betty: 16 pounds of food and approximately $200.00 were delivered to the Marana Food Bank. Eyeglasses and cell phones were given to the Lion’s Club. She reminded members not to forget the other charities. 6.5 Activities: Alice Behnke: See the attached agenda for events.
7. Group Concerns
a.) Members of the Lion’s Club were present: Carl Johanssen and Jim Brotherton from district 21B. They explained the background and mission objectives of the Lion’s Club; handed out brochures with additional information; talked about services they provide and, in general encouraged SCRCR to form another club here in Marana. So far, the closest one is in Oro Valley.
b.) Betty reminded the group that casino day is tomorrow and not the 15th. Casino day is always the second Friday of the month.
c.) Edna asked for clarification on the restaurant we are attending for lunch on Jan.28th. It is the New Asian Buffet and not the New China Buffet.
d.) Joann commented that 12 people hiked yesterday. Next week’s hike will be at Catalina State Park if it is still open This is not a difficult hike but it is approximately 5.2 miles.
e.) Jim brought up the issue of Mother’s Day usually being celebrated at Picacho Peak and if the state parks are closed, we need to be thinking of alternative locations.
f.) Bo reminded everyone of the Saturday monthly breakfast at the church of the Desert Sun. Also, Bo wanted us to remember Blankets for the homeless.
g.) Joann told us that all Christmas cards had been passed out with the exception of those to Mike Rebro.
h.) Carol Altman volunteered to handle the football pool for Super Bowl.
i.) January birthdays were celebrated with another great cake created by Edna! 8. Adjournment: Jim wrapped up the meeting with a story about a small boy’s ideas of the philosophy of life in relation to the life –style of his dog.

The meeting was adjourned at 10:25 am.
