Minutes of Meeting of May 5, 2011

1. Call to Order: Jim opened the meeting at 9:30 AM with the Pledge of Allegiance. This was followed by some jokes and a clarification from Magda re the actual meaning of Cinco de Mayo. Apparently it is primarily a Mexican-American Holiday as the actual Independence Day for Mexico is Sept 16th.
2. Host/Hostess: Dennis and Alice: No new members. Welcomed back were: Paul and Joan, Tressie S., Adria L., Agnes M., Ruth L. and Suzanne and Al.
3. Vice-President: Frank: absent. Walt reported that we now have 85 members.
4. Secretary: Jeanne: The minutes of Apr. 28st were approved and accepted. 41 members attended today.
5. Treasurer: Walt: The total in our treasury at present is $1142.50.
6. Coordinators’ Reports:
a) Refreshments: Betty reported that refreshments were provided by Nancy L. and Joyce G. Next week refreshments will be in the capable hands of Joan and Paul.
b) Sunshine: Linda D: absent. John D. requested an update from Alice B re Barb H. Barb is having a lot of pain and is also having trouble ambulating. She has been in hospital for numerous medical conditions but she is home now and her brother is with her. Arnie reported that Bea has fallen several times in the past few weeks. She is now at HealthSouth in Rm B-2. Her blood sugar was very high but is more controlled now and she is getting physical therapy.
c) Historian: Magda: no report.
d) Philanthropy: Betty: No food went to the Food Bank this past week but 12 boxes were mailed to military personnel. Betty and Bo’s garage sale netted $274.00 for the Food Bank and an equal amount for their Church.
e) Busybody: JoAnn: She is getting information from members who will be gone for the summer.
7. Activities: Carol A. Car pool for the Farmer’s Market will be at 9:30 AM Friday, May 6th. Note error in agenda for Boston Pizza and movie theatre day. These activities will take place on Fri. June 10th rather than June 15th. Jorge gave us some information re Kitt Peak. Entrance fee will be $44.00 per person for the nighttime show. There will be a further discount for groups and Jorge will get back to us next week with even more information. Please check the agenda for upcoming activities.
8. Group Concerns: a.) Don O. has information re Bingo activities in Connecticut if anyone is interested. Big prizes and big entrance fee!
b.) JoAnn commented on the benefits of the Skype accessory on computers which allows you to speak with and see your loved ones on the computer, even over great distances.
c.) Colette wanted to thank Betty for all her great work in getting the military personnel seen to with items they need and the packing of boxes.
d.) Magda wanted everyone to know that there is an article in this week’s Explorer on the problems with the Board at Sunflower.
e.) AGAM lunch today is at La Olla.
