Minutes of Meeting for October 5, 2017

Minutes of Meeting for October 5, 2017

  1. Call to Order:   Bill E. called the meeting to order, led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of God Bless America.  He then turned it over to Barb and Susan for introductions.  Then back to Bill and he told a lot of great jokes from Dorie Z. again – Dorie has some great jokes!!!
  2. Hostesses Barb L. and Susan D.  Barb counted 50 folks in attendance today!  We welcomed back Val and Rich, Linda and John and our dear Rose who we haven’t seen for a while – welcome back ya’ll ðŸ˜Š
  3. Vice President:  Debbi S. reports 117 members.
  4. Secretary:   Kristi G.:  The minutes for the September 28th meeting were approved.  Kristi gave a quick talk about respect for others in the group and that we should all just “agree to disagree” and more importantly, to just love one another.
I can also report that about 25 or so folks went to the Longhorn Steakhouse last night and were greatly impressed with the food, the prices and the service!  They did a pretty good job for a group that large.
  1. Treasurer:  Walt R.:    He reports a total of $1,391.05 with $16.65 of that total in petty cash.   Walt also told us that the South Florida Food Bank had cashed their $300.00 check.  Let’s try to remember to put our money in the pot for coffee “and”.  It’s $2.00 for a cup of coffee which includes all refills; $1.00 for sweets. Thanks much.
  2. Coordinators’ Reports:
    • Sunshine Dorie Z.:   Our dear Gladys is now at Mt. View Healthcare Center at 1313 W. Magee Road, Tucson 85704, for occupational therapy.  Not sure when she will be going home until the therapy is completed.  Surely, she would love to receive some cards and prayers are always, always welcomed.  Dorie also asked for a show of hands who all had gotten their flu shots already and most everyone had gotten them.  BUT for those who haven’t yet, please do, for your sake and for ours.  Nobody wants the flu, true that!
    • Historian:  Magda Q.:  Magda again thanked us all for the can tabs and says we need to fill 4 more jars to break last year’s record!  So drink up people!! ðŸ˜Š  Magda also brought up a very interesting event happening this Saturday October 7th, hence, I’m sending the minutes out early.  This is so timely and something we should all try to get out and do.  The Veterans are having “Old Glory” brought down here from Phoenix for a presentation at the Marana PD beginning at 7:30 Saturday morning.  From what we know so far is that the Flag will be bicycled from the Police Department down to the Frontage Road to Twin Peaks Road.  When it reaches Twin Peaks and Coachline (approximately 8:30-9:00 AM), it will be escorted to Sunflower’s Community Center where the Veterans will put on a presentation.  In this world of turmoil and all the horrendous occurrences we’ve had lately, along with the disrespect being shown for our Flag, we should try to get out tomorrow morning and support the Vets and the Flag.  If I find out any more information before tomorrow morning, I’ll certainly send it out.

    • Philanthropy:  John Z.:   John took 40 pounds of foodstuffs and $167.00.   Good job folks, keep it coming especially with all the holidays coming up.  John tells us there is an open house at the food bank all day on October 30th.  Should be very interesting to see how it all comes together and works.  John is also asking for two volunteers to assist him in determining the proper charities to give to when these horrific tragedies befall our fellow citizens.  Please give John a call if you could help.  Thanks much.
    • Hiking:  Jim A.:  No report as the hiking hasn’t started up again yet.
    • Activities:     See activities list below.
  1. Group Concerns/Good of the Group
  • Bea S., told us the sad news that our June S., will be leaving us soon to go and live with her son and daughter-in-law in Boise, Idaho.  Unfortunately, June can’t take her beloved little dog Sal with her.  Sal is 7-10 years old, we don’t know for sure because he’s a rescue.  He is great with kids, just loves them.  We are so hoping someone can give Sal a great home.  It’s so sad for both June and Sal.
  • Iles W., who was in the insurance business for over 30 years gave us some very good advice now that it’s coming time to pick insurances again.  He told us to avoid United Healthcare at all costs.  I think we all remember what they pulled earlier this year when they threatened to pull out of NorthWest Hospital and all the doctors associated with it.  That was something that they do frequently all over the United States.  Not very nice.  Another one that has a lot of problems is The Hartford that AARP is associated with.  Of course, it’s your personal decision to make, Iles is just pointing out the insurance companies that he knows have been trouble over his years in the business.  Thank you Iles!
  • Jim A., brought up about the Blog that he has been keeping it up for the past 4 years so I will add that back in to the minutes.
  • Bitsy asked whoever it was to volunteer to go with her to help with the unwed moms and the babies to contact her because Bitsy, like the rest of us, had a “senior moment” and can’t remember who it was who said they’d help.
Bitsy also said that she is going to start a petition to cover all these pesky robo calls we all get that if they call, they get fined a lot of money.  Maybe that’ll stop them!  I’m sure we’ll all sign that petition when she gets it “fine-tuned”.  Thank you Bitsy!
  • Rich R. brought up that because we have been short in the weekly “coffee/biscuit bucket”, we should all just ante up $1 each week for the sake of having the meeting.  It’s sure worth $1 a week for what we get out of it ðŸ˜Š  Great idea Richard!
  • Richard and Val also said that they can take 4 more people with them to the dinner at BJ’s and the play at the Gaslight next week Thursday, so if you need a ride, please get in touch with Rich and Val.  Thanks you guys for doing that! ðŸ˜Š
  • Susan D., said that she and Gene got new phones through Verizon and that if you show them a DD214 (discharge papers) you will get a 15% discount on your monthly  phone bill – that can add up folks!  Thanks Susan for that information.
  • Kristi G., asked for donations of children’s games, coloring books, crayons, puzzles, from ages little toddlers to teens for the Marana Police Department.  These will be used to keep children occupied while they are in the police department for various reasons, say their parents were involved in something and they had to be brought in to the station to give a statement or worse yet, be arrested.  These kids are traumatized in these kinds of situations and hopefully if we have enough things there to keep them busy, it will take their minds from it for a little while anyway.  Anything you could donate would be appreciated.  Thanks in advance.
  • Dorie Z., said that since we are rapidly approaching the holiday season, we won’t do the “Breakfast Club” thingy until January.  Please e-mail Dorie with any thoughts on where to go for breakfast.  There is a lot of interest in this so thank you Dorie so much for thinking of this.  It’s going to be lots of fun! 😊
  • George R. (who is still active in real estate) has some tickets for the upcoming fall home show if anyone would like them.  The show runs October 6-8.

  1. Thought of the Day:  Sandy P. had another super good thought for the day and “brought the house down” again with her ending joke.

  1. Adjournment:  Bill E. ended the meeting at 10:35 AM.
