Minutes of Meeting for August 31, 2017

Minutes of Meeting for August 31, 2017

1.       Call to Order:   Bill E. called the meeting to order, led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of God Bless America.  He then turned it over to Barb and Susan for introductions.  Bill introduced a “guest” who was our dear Iles and he told a great joke.
2.       Hostesses Barb L. and Susan D.  Barb counted 31 folks in attendance today and another new member!  That would be Mary M. – welcome again Mary and Paula our two newest members!  We also had another guest Gerry from Pittsburgh which made Barbara L. very happy because so far, Barb is the only one here from Pittsburgh.  Gerry is a friend of George and Alice R. who unfortunately weren’t there today.  We hope to see Gerry come back and join us.
3.       Vice President:  Debi S. reports we now have 117 members!
4.       Secretary:   Kristi G.:  The minutes for the August 24th meeting were approved.
5.      Treasurer:  Walt R.:    He also reports a total of $2,152.86 with $15.65 of that total in petty cash.  Walt brought up the tragedy that has hit southeast Texas and asked if we would like to make a donation to a worthy charity.  We didn’t have enough folks for a quorum to vote on it plus there was a discussion on which charity to donate to.  The board will research different charities and there will be a vote on it next week if we have enough folks for a quorum.
Let’s try to remember to put our money in the pot for coffee “and”.  It’s $2.00 for a cup of coffee which includes all refills; $1.00 for sweets. Thanks much.
6.      Coordinators’ Reports:
o   Sunshine Sandy P.:   We are up to 8 weeks without anyone being sick people, that’s super!!  Sandy also reports that George S.  is home and recuperating nicely from his surgery.  Bea saw George and Julie on Tuesday and reports that George is doing well.  Let’s still keep them in our prayers so that hopefully the implant will bring George some relief.
o   Historian:  Magda Q.:  Magda reminded us to think about bringing in a little piece of our own history to share with the group.  She also told about “back in the day” when if you wanted to come and eat at Lil Abner’s, you’d have to take a dirt road all the way there.  That’s when they were making all the Western movies at Old Tucson and all the movie people would go over and eat and drink at Lil Abner’s cause it was the only place around there to do that.  They have lots of great old pictures inside – worth a look see.  Magda also thanked everyone for the pull tabs.
o   Philanthropy:  John Z.:   Walt will take over until John Z. returns.  The “bucket” was empty so Maria D. picked it up and passed it around and we made a nice little collection for the Marana Food Bank – thank you Maria! 😊
o   Hiking:  Jim A.:  No report as the hiking is over until fall
o   Activities:  Pam M.:   See activities list below.
7.      Group Concerns/Good of the Group
*      Magda told the group about more upcoming roadwork to begin on Cortaro between Camino De Oeste and Thornydale.  Won’t that be lovely?  Cortaro and Ina all torn up at the same time.  Hello Twin Peaks!
*      Deb S. asked for our opinions on what kind of docs we’d like to have come in and speak to us.  The first one will be November 2nd but we don’t know who yet.  Deb gave us a lot to choose from and we unanimously picked (1) a pharmacist who will speak to the interactions of our drugs and (2) a pain management doctor.  Deb will advise which doc will come in on November 2 and the other to speak on January 4.
8.      Thought of the Day:  Sandy P. had a real heartwarming thought for the day and a cute joke.

9.       Adjournment:  Bill E. ended the meeting at 10:07 AM.
