Minutes of Meeting for November 29, 2018

Minutes of Meeting for November 29, 2018

Call to Order:   Bill E.  led us in the Pledge and then we sang God Bless America.   Bill then turned the meeting over to Barb.  After Barb spoke, Bill introduced Jim Alam who undertook the naming of the new board for next year.  The vote was Sharon Singer for President, Cindy Tolleson for Vice President and Mary Metzger for treasurer and me for secretary.  The vote was unanimous for all and the motion was carried and seconded.  Welcome to the new Board.
  1. Hostesses:  Barb L. and Susan D.  Barb reports 42 in attendance again today.  Susan has a cold and didn’t want to spread any germs.  Thanks Susan, we missed you and we love you and we love Gene too and miss him a lot!
  2. Vice President:   Debbi S.:  We are at 119 members
  3. Secretary:   Kristi G.:   Everything was OK with the minutes.  Kristi said the Board had voted on the charities to receive $300.00 each this year and it was decided (1) Gospel Rescue Mission, (2) Humane Society of Tucson, (3) Fischer House (like Ronald McDonald House but for Vets families at the VA) and finally (4) Youth on Their Own.  We will also give Clint at The Station an extra little something at Christmas time.
  4. Treasurer:  Walt R.:    $1,742.69 in the bank.    Walt also said that there is a gentleman cowboy singer that plays at the Bonfire Mesquite Grill where our Christmas party is being held and he doesn’t charge any money, it’s free.  He asked if everyone was OK with him singing some “background” music and everyone was fine with that.  Walt also asked if we could just give him $50.00 for his singing and everyone was OK with that as well.
Please people, remember to put your money in the pot for coffee “and”.  It’s $2.00 for a cup of coffee which includes all refills; $1.00 for sweets. We’ve been short for the past month.  Even if you just have a glass of water, put a little something in the bucket Thanks much.
  1. Coordinators Reports:
Sunshine Mary M. & Dorie Z.:  Edna spoke to Janet Kels this past week and for those of you who don’t know the name, Janet is the lady that started our group so many years ago.  She started it with a blurb in the local newsletter and a bag of doughnuts and some coffee.  The first time, no one came, the next week a couple of ladies showed up and from there, this group was born.  Janet is totally blind and has no family so please remember her with cards, a note or a phone call.  She would love that!
·         Historian:  Magda Q.:   No history but Magda thanked Dorie for making the arrangements for the breakfast yesterday at The Cryin Onion.  There were 21 in attendance and a good time was had by all.
·         Philanthropy:     John took $185.00 and 8# of food to the Marana Food Bank.  Good work folks.

·         Activities:  See activities listed below.  Note:  When you sign up for an activity, please let whoever oversees that activity know whether you’ll make it.  It’s embarrassing if you tell a place that 30 or 40 folks are coming to a function, so they set up for that, get extra help for that and then only 20 or so show up.    Please remember to RSVP if you are going to attend something and to let the person in charge know if you can’t make it.  Thanks.

  1. Group Concerns/Good of the Group

  • Wally Gazdik would like everyone to know about an upcoming event on December 15th that sounds like a lot of fun for the whole family.  It is the Southern Arizona Transportation Museum presents free family fun at the Historic Train Depot.  It’s on Saturday, December 15th beginning at 10:00 AM.  The Depot is located at 414 N. Toole in downtown Tucson.  The phone is 520.623.2223.  The kids can talk with Santa and get a picture with him in front of Locomotive 1673 (the star of the movie “Oklahoma”).  You can join in  in singing holiday music, you can write a letter to Santa at the North Pole (with the Tucson Postal History Museum Elves’ help).  You can look at the museum’s bilingual exhibits, new live action displays with actual operating trains.  You can listen to a reading of the “Polar Express”.  You can climb into the cab of steam locomotive 11673.  Shop in the gift store, see the railroad art exhibits and train layout in the Amtrak lobby and an arts and crafts show!  There is plenty of FREE parking around the Depot.  Go towww.TucsonHistoricDepot.org for more information.

  • When doing your Christmas cards this year, take a minute and send one to:
A Recovering American Soldier c/o Walter Reed Army Medical Center, 6900 Georgia Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20307-5001.  Please pass this on to your friends and family so that those that have sacrificed so much for us and our freedoms, won’t feel forgotten at this most special time of year.

  • Wally and Julie Gazdik are still collecting gently used towels and blankets for the PACC animal rescue.  Julie read where they need these for all the rescued and abandoned pets that they get there.  So please go through your linen closets and see what you can come up with for a very worthy cause.

  • Barb Lebowitz asked me to tell you all that if you used Rob Pelfreyman for your landscaping needs, he is no longer in business.  He has turned his business over to someone else and Barb has that name and number.

  • Please get your “Member of the Year” nominations to Jorge Anda ASAP.

  • Dennis Foster is still collecting your empty pill bottles for the Pima Animal Care facility.  They need them to give out to folks who may adopt or foster dogs/cats who may need medication when they leave their facility.

  • Iles told us (and this is a TRUE STORY) that the new Circle K at Silverbell and Ina is open.

  1. Thought for the Day:  Sandy P.  None of us are getting out of here alive so please stop treating yourself like an afterthought.  Eat the delicious food, walk in the sunshine, jump in the ocean.  Say the truth that you are carrying in your heart like a hidden treasure.  Be silly, be kind, be weird.  There’s no time for anything else.
Joke:  Two old ladies are sitting in church.  One turns to the other and says “my butt fell asleep”.  The other says, “Yeah, I thought I heard it snore a couple of times.” 😊

  1. Adjournment:  Bill E.: Bill adjourned the meeting at 10:11 AM.
