Minutes of Meeting for January 3, 2019

Minutes of Meeting for January 3, 2019

Call to Order:   Jim Alam led us in the Pledge and then we sang God Bless America.   Jim then explained that he would be introducing the new Board for the year 2019 and did just that!  Sharon Singer is our new President, Cindy Tolleson is our Vice President and Mary Metzger is our new treasurer and you still let me be the secretary 😊.  Sharon then took over the meeting from Jim and began her “Official Duties” as Madam President.

  1. Hostesses:  Barb L. and Cheryl W.  Barb reports 48 in attendance today.  Susan said her goodbyes as far as being one of our hostesses and both she and Barb wished everyone a Happy New Year.  Cindy’s husband John attended again and maybe, just maybe he’ll be our 121st member 😊
  2. Vice President:   Cindy T.:  We are at 120 members
  3. Secretary:   Kristi G.:   Everything was OK with the minutes and I thanked Julie for stepping up and taking over while I was gone most of December.  I offered Julie the job, but she said no, no, no but she would be my back-up which is excellent.
  4. Treasurer:  Walt R.:    $232.65 in the bank.    Walt also gave an end-of-the-year report which has some interesting facts.  For the year we gave the Marana Food Bank $1,787.00 and over 300 pounds of food.    Great work everyone and according to John Z., we are off to a great start for 2019.  Walt also received thank you letters from The Humane Society of Southern Arizona and Gospel Rescue Mission which were two of the charities we selected to send money to this year.
Some other interesting expenditures were $246.84 for birthday cakes for the year, $92.42 for the Who’s Who books, $1,400.00 overall for charities and $384.00 for the coffee “make-up” fund which leads me to my weekly message which is the following,
Please people, remember to put your money in the pot for coffee “and”.  It’s $2.00 for a cup of coffee which includes all refills; $1.00 for sweetsWe keep on being short each week and we can do better people.  Even if you just have a glass of water, please put a little something in the bucket.  Thanks much.
Walt then turned over his duties to Mary Metzger, our new Treasurer.
  1. Coordinators’ Reports:
Sunshine:  Barbara R.:     In Barb’s absence, Pam Mastrianni said that she had just been visiting with Marie Moore and that she was doing much better recovering from pneumonia and would love visitors but please call first.  Cards and phone calls would be appreciated too.  Someone, and I’m so sorry but I forgot who, saw Linda DiPalma and said she is doing okay but that John is not doing well.  Hopefully we can get a card off to cheer him when Barb returns.
·         Historian:  Magda Q.:   Magda wished everyone a Happy and Healthy New Year.  Magda is also going to make a concerted effort in this next year to, contact past members who have “retired” from us (they can no longer make it to meetings for one reason or another) but they have been instrumental in getting this group off the ground and keeping it going for almost 20 years!  We are all still one big happy family and we need to keep in touch with these folks.
·         Philanthropy:  John Z.:     John took $126.00 to the Food Bank.
·         Activities:  See activities listed below.  Note:  When you sign up for an activity, please let whoever oversees that activity know whether you’ll make it.  It’s embarrassing if you tell a place that 30 or 40 folks are coming to a function, so they set up for that, get extra help for that and then only 20 or so show up.    Please remember to RSVP if you are going to attend something and to let the person in charge know if you can’t make it.  Thanks.

  1. Group Concerns/Good of the Group

  • If anyone is interested, the Wheeler Taft Abbett Library is offering Tai Chi for Health Classes on Wednesday mornings from 10:15 thru 11:15.  The dates for these classes are January 9th (which has past), January 16 and 30, February 6, 13 and 20.  Tai Chi is very good for balance and mobility

  • Pam thanked Bill and Elizabeth for opening their home to all on New Year’s Eve!  A wonderful time was had by all and the food was outstanding!  There was a hearty round of well-deserved applause for Bill and Elizabeth.

  • Wally and Julie Gazdik will still collect gently used towels and blankets for the PACC animal rescue.  Julie read where they need these for all the rescued and abandoned pets that they get there.  So please go through your linen closets and see what you can come up with for a very worthy cause.

  • Julie is also collecting coupons from newspapers and/or magazines to send to troops and their families abroad.  In the commissaries, they will accept coupons for six months past their expiration date!  Julie is trying to partner up with a US base in the UK so that we can send the coupons directly to the base.  Here are the rules for coupon clipping:
  • From manufacturers for individual products.  Examples include items like soup, pasta, or toothpaste.
  • Not for individual stores - coupons for individual stores can’t be used.
  • They should be clipped out individually.
  • Please package them in a sandwich or quart-size plastic bag.
  • Please separate into food, non-food, baby, and pet baggies (the military advises they will recycle unsorted coupons due to lack of manpower).

  • Dennis Foster is still collecting your SMALL empty pill bottles for the Pima Animal Care facility.  They need them to give out to folks who may adopt or foster dogs/cats who may need medication when they leave their facility.  PACC has confirmed that they only need the small prescription bottles.

  • Continental Ranch Community (and surrounding areas) has a Veterans Club that meets on the 3rdSunday of each month at the Continental Ranch Community Center located at 8881 N. Coachline Blvd., from 6 to 8 PM.  All military Vets are welcome to join in for fellowship and friendship.  They usually have a guest speaker and at the next meeting which is January 20th, the guest speaker(s) will be the folks that train service dogs for Vets and they plan to bring one of their student dogs.  For more info contact Keith Jones who is the Vet group VP at (520) 490.7880.

  1. Thought for the Day:  Sandy P.  “When a door closes, knock on it a few times.  But if it still doesn’t open, let it stay closed.  In a career, in love, in LIFE, when you see the period at the end of the sentence, don’t try and turn it into a comma.  Know when something is over and move on.”
Joke: (and Sandy was kind enough to demonstrate this so use your imagination people).  “EXERCISES FOR THOSE OVER 55”.  With a 5# potato sack in each hand, extend your arms horizontally and hold for one minute, then relax.  Each day you’ll find that you can hold this position a little longer.  After 2 weeks, move up to a 10# potato sack and after 1 month try a 50# potato sack.  Eventually you will be able to lift a 100# sack in each hand, holding your arms straight for one minute.  After you feel confident at this level, (get ready), put a potato in each sack!     LOL 😊

  1. Adjournment Sharon S.:  Sharon adjourned the meeting around 10:15 AM.
